Poem # 54

vanquished

rain drops fell this false fall night

like tears from hosts of

angels mourn my lowly plight

I’ve said the words I’ve fought the fight

I wrestled with demons this night

to no avail I turn my soul

heaven bound no words they know

within nothing can touch  my tortured

soul whipped love exorcised

no avail the fight finished

this sword I lay down at the feet

vanquished by the empathy of my

heart nobility of spirit laid low

by a heart of darkness to whom

I bared all and risked what

never should have been freely given

freely all for naught

He said, "Why should I tarry?"

And smiled with tranquil eye;

"In destinies sad or merry,

True men can but try."

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
