Poem # 55

you win.

no call I’ll take

no call I’ll make

no message will I give

or respond

no forgiveness I’ll seek

no word I’ll keep

all promises null and void

no effort I’ll make

no risk I’ll take

hardened in the crucible of you

and a fire grown cold

no charity I’ll give

no prerogative I’ll forgive

I wash my hands of you

three chances I gave

three mistakes I made

letting you back inside

no quarter within

wronged again

no more shall I abide

a fool I was

to chance false love

sleep no more sacrificed

my conscience weighed

found pure unafraid

no faithlessness I hid

I quit this game

you win.

He said, "Why should I tarry?"

And smiled with tranquil eye;

"In destinies sad or merry,

True men can but try."

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
