The following is an e-mail I sent to Governor Dave Heineman of Nebraska in response to the loss of sensitive
information on 26.5 million veterans by the Veterans Administration:
Dear Honorable Governor Heineman:
After
researching alternatives to protecting my personal credit after the theft of the VA hard drive containing sensitive information
on 26.5 million veterans, one of whom was me, I discovered that the state of Nebraska has no law allowing for the option of
placing a "security freeze" with any of the three credit reporting agencies, Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.
I
am concerned about protecting the good name and finances of my family and me, and would like to urge you to encourage Nebraska
unicameral legislators to propose and pass legislation protecting veterans like me by allowing us to opt for a security freeze
on our credit.
The attached link contains information directly from one of the credit reporting agencies outlining
the security freeze policy and what states participate, of which Nebraska
is not one.
Thank you for your time and attention. I realize that you may not be able to personally answer my e-mail
and address my concerns, yet it is my sincerest hope that a member of your staff may be able to pursue the matter judiciously
and kindly respond to my request.
Sincerely,
My Name
As a precaution, I urge affected veterans to
go to the website http://www.firstgov.gov/veteransinfo.shtml#credit for information on whether or not their state offers a Security Freeze option
to protect their credit.
